Features of Detective Fiction Essay

Holmes is a detective who is made for his job. He solves the problems by using his intelligence and power if deduction. He is an archetypal detective; his assistant Dr Watson is also an archetypal who is not as smart as the detective itself is. Dr Watson is the narrator of all the Sherlock Holmes stories. He is known as a doctor in every story because it would make the readers trust him and therefore believe in the stories told by him. Watson is shown as less skilful, lacking the reason skills compared to Holmes, this makes us the same level as well as him because he too doesn’t know what’s behind the curtains. If in any case the detective was to narrate the story to the reader, he/she would straight away give out who they suspect and spoil the tension rising. If we find out from a second persons point of view it would slowly build up tension because they too do not know what is going on behind the detective’s mind. The famous feature of Sherlock Holmes character is his intelligence, which he reveals very modestly. Sherlock Holmes talks very little compared to his visitors, and have the ability to listen completely attentively to every detail of his victim’s description, ‘Leaning back in his chair with his eyes closed†¦ ‘ (The Speckled Band) This shows that Sherlock Holmes obviously has some amazing powers of concentration and imagination as he questions the victim and considers the situation, this would give him a fair idea of the story before he leaves the room. Sherlock Holmes would have had a very good idea of the crime; he would then go to the actual place only to confirm what he has already assumed. The three stories which we have studied on were ‘The Red Headed League,’ ‘The Speckled Band,’ and ‘The Priory School. ‘ All three stories were usually set in a rich upper class establishments, such as the Manor for’ The Speckled Band, ‘ the local shops and banks for ‘The Red Headed League,’ and the countryside school(and Inn) for ‘The Priory School. ‘ The summary for ‘The Speckled Band’ is †¦ A twin sister has died just prior to her marriage; her last words were ‘The Band! The Speckled Band. ‘ The other sister, Helen, finds herself, as her wedding approaches, seeing similar signs of things that her sister described just before her death. Fearing that her own end is close, Helen rushes to the world-renowned Sherlock Homes in a desperate attempt to save herself. After her situation is described Holmes and Watson investigate her house leading them to an action packed final. The summary for ‘The Red-Headed League’ is†¦ Jabez Wilson is a pawnbroker whose store is located on Coburg Square next to a bank. He told Holmes about his employee Vincent Spaulding and the ‘League of Red-Headed Men. ‘ This is a group established by a red-headed American millionaire, who left a large amount of money for men such hair colour. Spaulding introduces him to the head of the operation, who is also red-headed. Poor Wilson had to work four hours everyday copying out the Encyclopaedia Britannica in an office. So far, he did eight weeks until he found the office locked. Holmes becomes excited at Spaulding description. That evening Holmes gathers the Scotland Yard police officer, Inspector Lestrade, Mr Merryweather, the director of the bank, to descend into its vault beneath the bank. They lay wait in the dark, until Spaulding was spotted descend into the vault. Later Holmes found out that his real name was John Clay, a criminal of who Holmes is well aware. There is a typical plot structure for most detective stories. They begin with an exposition, where we are then introduced to the characters involved and we learn something of their background. ‘†¦ he beat his native butler to death’ Dr Grimsby Roylott (The Speckled Band) This is when a little rise of tension begins. Next, someone arrives and announces a death or something dreadful that has happened. The tension is raised significantly. After that, the individuals who are suspected are investigated, or it could mean that they have collected clues. Often in most detective stories if the person suspected turns out to be innocent, then this is called a red herring. Finally, the perpetrator is revealed in a moment of high tension; generally, it is the last person the readers expect it to be. The guilty person admits their guilt and explains why they did it, and within this conclusion, the tension drops significantly. It is terror. ‘ Helen Stoner (The Speckled Band) However, the villain would be well educated and physically unacceptable. They come from the high aristocracy and would speak English frequently. They all seem to have an attitude towards the lower class because they think they are better then them in everyway. John Clay matches this description because he is educated †¦ ‘I beg that you will not touch me with your filthy hands, you may not be ware that I have royal blood in my vein. ‘ John Clay said this to Jones, the Scotland Yard Officer, because he was putting on the handcuffs upon Clay’s wrists. The moral message in all the stories is†¦ ‘What goes around comes around, ‘Dr Grimsby Rowlott tried to kill his second victim but got into his own trap. ‘The Speckled Band’ ‘Never commit theft because sooner or later you’ll get caught red handed,’ at the end John Clay was caught up with his guilt ‘The Red-Headed League’ ‘Never commit fraud or murder because it is a crime,’ kidnapping the child let the criminal to murdering an innocent person. ‘The Priory School’ In this coursework, I was told to read three books based on Arthur Canon Doyle. He wrote Detective stories and one of the famous detective stories ever told was about Sherlock Holmes. Doyle succeeded in writing the mystery stories and the perfect way of solving it. There was other writer like Agatha Christie who was well known worldwide and was famous for her incredible detective stories. One of he other author was J. B Priestly who wrote detective stories, but the difference between other authors and his was that his stories were always a moral crime, this means the criminal comes out in his own. In conclusion, I will say that using all these devices, Doyle successfully builds up inquisitiveness and hence mystery and intrigue. He uses little but heavy description; he is able to build up a powerful image into the readers mind and has the ability to shock the reader to submission. The way the whole truth is revealed is more dramatic and much more successful in entertaining the reader. Peter Saunders now claims minority rule by a minority class has been replaced with a nation of stakeholders. However the continued existence of a ‘power elite' controlling the majority of wealth and power has been well documented by John Scott. Manual work patterns have changed also, i.e. in the primary and secondary industry manual jobs have declined significantly, whilst service sector jobs have increased. The expansion of the Welfare state has caused professional and non manual jobs to increase, results in a bloated middle class. The traditional working class has also changed, with women becoming a more influential and important member of the work force. Part time work has increase too. As a result of a rising global economy a geographical shift in the traditional working class has emerged. In the West there has been a growth in non manual employment with an extension of state services, in particular teachers, nurses, clerks etc There has also been an increase the employment of women and part time low insecure employment. Roberts claims the middle class has expanded but also ‘fragmented' into a number of distinct groups, i.e. professionals, managers, self employed. Roberts call these strata within the middles class ‘class fractions' each with its own culture, norms and values. Businesses also take more care of their workforce through better conditions, pay and concern for professional development. To support these claims by Bell the primary and secondary industries have declined whilst tertiary have expanded, as a result fewer people in Western Europe now work more with their brains than with their hands. Service sector workers lack the old structures of union and solidarity, thus seemingly becoming more privatised. There has been a growth of highly skilled new technology workers (wired workers) whom work from home, enjoying increased flexibility, challenge and autonomy. However there is strong evidence against Bell's theory, i.e. some sociologists argue that manual work has simply followed market conditions to low labour costing parts of the world. Corys death was heroic but it is possible to see the hanging of Proctor from a different perspective. It could be said that it was not a heros action to die but that of a guilty and cowardly man. In the book Miller, as well as Proctor, openly tells us of the characters mistakes. The reason Proctor chooses to be hung is because he could not bear to have his reputation tarnished. It could also be said though that he just could not bear the embarrassment of pleading innocence in order to save his life. John Proctor can be perceived as either a hero or a coward. I think that Proctor was a hero in this book. The way the book talks of him leads me to think of him as a well respected and highly thought of individual. I think that his actions were extremely brave and heroic. It must take a huge amount of bravery to go to your death even though you can get out of it. Despite there being little symbolism in the play it is a definite symbolic representation of the McCarthy anti-communist trials of the 1950s. I have explained previously about these trials and how they led Arthur Miller writing the book so from this is it obvious that Miller had these trials in mind whilst writing The Crucible. Many people have said though that these two events are completely different in that there were (as far as we know) no actual witches in Salem yet there were definitely communists in 1950 America. In the book I noticed that Miller seemed to focus more on the unwillingness of the judges to believe that the accused townspeople were innocent and preferred to hang as many people as possible in order to improve their status and rank within the court. I think this because when Danforths judgement is questioned he informs the court of how many death warrants he has signed, this to me shows that Danforth thinks that the more people you have hung the more respected you become. It is made obvious to us that Danforth is an important character because when he enters everyone in the room goes silent. This could suggest that you are more important if you have signed a lot of death warrants. This use of silence is another dramatic device used by Miller to emphasise an entrance and to make the audience focus on the entering character. I personally dont know how the judges didnt see through the girls because when I watched the video I noticed a lot of things which prove the girls are lying. For example, in Act 3, Abigail claims that a cold wind blows and blames Mary Warren for sending out her spirit. During this performance, John Proctor claims that Abigail is a whore and that he has committed adultery with her. Abigail immediately stops acting and desperately informs Danforth that she is not a whore or a lecher. This could have been a major downfall for Abigail if someone had noticed this. I am particularly surprised that Proctor did not. If he had the trials could have ended there and then and would have prevented the deaths of many innocent people. In addition to themes Miller also introduces motifs. A motif is a recurring design, feature or melody. Accusation, Legal Proceedings and Confessions are major motifs of The Crucible. These appear regularly throughout the book and are the centre of action in the play. The only way that the witches could be found was through the accusations and confessions. The trials only continue as a result of accusations. Salinger’s The Catcher is the Rye, the protagonist Holden Caufield emerges from a trying and emotional series of events and does not grow emotionally but remains as immature as he was at the beginning of the novel. The story is about the difficulties of growing up. Most people come out of their teenager years as more responsible and mature people. Holden goes through many stressful events during the weekend, but instead of coming out more mature and grown up, he still has the same childish views on life; he is violent minded, depressed, confused, and irresponsible. Throughout the whole novel, Holden fantasizes about killing people, he is baffled by sex, and he does not think out his actions. During the beginning of the story, Holden thinks about killing people many times. He wanted to kill Stradlater, his roommate, for dating Jane Gallagher, his old friend. Holden knew what kind of guy Stradlater was and he was afraid he took advantage of Jane. Holden actually does fight Stradlater but gets hurt pretty badly. He then puts his hunting hat on and says it is a â€Å"people shooting† hat. Later on in the story, Holden again thinks about killing people. When Maurice, the pimp, hurts Holden and steals his money, Holden pretends that he had been shot in the stomach and his guts were falling out. He then pretends that he is staggering down the stairs with a gun to shoot Maurice and get revenge. Holden does not actually do this, but it shows how he is immature and violent. Also, while Holden is visiting Phoebe’s school, he sees that someone has written â€Å"fuck† on the wall. He becomes very angry and wants the bash the skull of whoever did that on the marble floor so they are all bloody. Again we see that Holden has much anger in him. He does not know how to deal with it and that shows he has not grown up. Holden also does not ever figure out his views on sex. At the beginning he hates Stradlater because he takes advantage of girls. He says has never done anything to a girl because he always stops when they say â€Å"stop†. Holden says that he would have to really like the girl’s face and really get to know the person before he could have sex with them. When Holden gets to New York he calls Faith Cavendish, who he thinks is a stripper. He does not even know her but he wants to have sex with her. This goes against everything he said before. Then when Holden gets to the hotel Maurice offers Holden a hooker and he accepts. Holden then does not do anything with her because he is nervous and it does not seem right to him. Once again Holden is confused about sex. It is a foreign thing to him and he never figures it out. He has ideals that he sets for himself but he never follows through. He even tries to ask Carl Luce, an old friend, about sex but Carl is uncomfortable talking about it and Holden learns nothing new. Holden never learns how to control his emotions and actions about love and sex. Lastly, Holden does not learn how to think out his actions. In the beginning, Holden makes numerous wrong decisions. He runs away from Pencey without even telling his parents he was kicked out. That was a bad decision because when his parents will have found out he would have been in even more trouble for not telling them. Holden also constantly lies to people throughout the book, which shows his immaturity. Later in the book Holden makes some really poor spur of the moment choices too. He scares Sally Hayes, a girl he goes on a date with, by telling her that they should get married and move up north and live in a cabin. He urges her to do it and even raises his voice. Sally cries and says he is crazy. This shows how Holden does not think out his actions, which in turn hurts himself and others. He also spends money without thinking. Holden spends money on taxis, hotel rooms, food, dates, and the nuns. He does not think about managing his money and then he is forced to take his sister Phoebe’s Christmas money. This hurts himself because he does not want to take Phoebe’s money and it also hurts her because she does not have money to buy people presents. Holden’s lack of thinking hurts himself and others. Lastly, Holden plans to run away to the west and just get away from everyone. He would have done it but Phoebe stops him. Running away would have been really dumb because he didn’t have much money or anywhere to go. Holden never learns to think out his actions and this shows that he does not grow up. In J.D.
